AC Pressure Switch: What It Is and Why It Matters

When we're troubleshooting cooling issues for homeowners, one component we check regularly is the AC pressure switch. It's a small part, but it plays a big role in keeping your system safe. Your AC's refrigerant circuit needs to stay within a specific pressure range to work properly and safely. High-pressure and low-pressure switches monitor that range and automatically shut the compressor off if pressure moves outside safe limits, protecting expensive components from damage.

A high-pressure trip is often caused by something restricting airflow across the outdoor condenser coil — a coil caked with dirt and debris, or a fan that isn't spinning properly. A low-pressure trip usually points the other direction, toward low refrigerant from a leak or a badly clogged air filter starving the system of airflow.

It can be tempting to just reset the system and move on when a pressure switch trips, but that switch tripped for a reason. Resetting it without addressing the underlying cause usually just means it trips again, sometimes after causing more damage in the process.

If your system keeps shutting off and won't stay running, a pressure switch trip is a strong possibility, and it's worth having a technician pinpoint the actual cause rather than guessing at fixes.
