SEER Rating Explained: What It Means and What Counts as Good

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and it measures how much cooling a system produces for the energy it uses over a typical cooling season. The higher the number, the more efficient the unit — simple as that, though what counts as "high enough" depends a lot on where you live.

Newer systems are rated under an updated standard called SEER2, which tests under conditions closer to real-world airflow resistance than the original SEER test did. A SEER2 rating on a spec sheet isn't directly comparable to an older SEER number, which matters if you're comparing a new quote against an older system's rating.

Minimum allowed ratings differ by region — federal standards require a higher minimum in southern states like California than in the north, since AC systems here run so much more of the year. For a hot inland climate like Hemet and San Jacinto, most sources recommend aiming higher than the bare minimum, typically somewhere in the 16-18 SEER2 range, since the efficiency gap actually gets used here instead of sitting idle most of the year.

A higher SEER unit usually costs more upfront, but the payback period is shorter in a climate that runs AC as many months as ours does. If you're trying to figure out what a given SEER difference would actually mean for your bill, our SEER savings calculator runs the numbers based on your actual usage instead of a generic estimate.

SEER is also one of the first things worth checking if you're weighing repairing an aging AC versus replacing it — an older system still running on its original 10-13 SEER rating is often costing more in monthly energy use than the difference in a new system's payment would be.

If you're shopping for a new system or just trying to understand what's already installed in your home, we're happy to walk through what SEER rating makes sense for your specific setup — reach out and we'll help you figure it out.
